In Hong Kong, the prevailing practice after cremation is to store the cremains in columbarium facilities.
In recent years, Hong Kong has seen a severe shortage of public columbaria, which has led to rising concerns over the increasing number of unauthorized private columbaria exploiting legally questionable niche operations. People have thus turned to their Pearl River Delta neighbor, Macau, as an emerging location to lay their loved ones.
The design is a pure, calm and tranquil architecture, where people can memorialize the deceased within the primitive order of form and space, light and shadow, solid and void.
The plan is divided into quadrants in order to create small chambers of niche halls with dedicated cultural realms. The 6-storey building provides over 100 multi-faith niche halls of varying sizes which are strategically positioned to suit demand on each level and create a spatial hierarchy.
In the center is a quiet and contemplative garden as the heart of the activity. Along with the elongated arrival court, garden deck and outdoor terrace, they not only filter in natural air and daylight, but also serve as transitional and cleansing spaces for one’s mind and soul.
